Back to the (pastels) drawing board

As you may have seen in my recent posts, I recently started an art journal. I’d seen online how some artists keep one, and decided it might be a good idea for me.

The idea with these journals is to capture an image, event, or idea quickly on the page. I tend to fuss and fiddle over stuff, so I’ve found this a useful tool to avoid doing that.

But I’ve begun to worry that while I’m getting more comfortable with this style of art, my novice-level skills in fine art are getting rusty.

So yesterday evening I pulled up a photo I like and pulled out my pastels.

I did feel rusty with my pastels. And I think this needs more work, but I’m at the point where I’m stuck, so I’m setting it aside for now.

My take-away? Practice and growing comfort/proficiency in one form of art media doesn’t necessarily carry over to others. Not for me, anyway!
