I know, I know…a scarf for the 4th of July? Yep. I just started a month-long challenge to write a novel start to finish, so of course I just had to pull out my needlework supplies and crochet a scarf. Craziness.
The inspiration came from a bland blue T shirt I have. I’ve never liked it and can’t remember why I bought it. But it’s in good shape, and I figure can be worn around the house. I tried it on again the other day, thinking the blue would be a good color to wear during the long 4th of July weekend. But I was again struck by how boring the shirt is. I was also struck by how age related changes are beginning to show in my neck area.
Hence the idea I woke up with this morning, to crochet some sort of summertime infinity scarf, maybe a narrow scarf created more for a fashion statement than a full sized scarf. I pulled out skeins of red, white and blue worsted weight yarn and a number 5 crochet hook, and using the moss stitch created a long thin scarf consisting of a row of each color.
It looked like a lanyard that you hang your work ID from, not a scarf or crocheted necklace. A few more rows and I was reminded of a pastor’s stole. I kept going. A couple more rows and I decided to stop–any more and I would be heading toward a full-sized winter scarf.
I finished off my last stitch, tied the fringed ends together and double wrapped it around my neck, over the blah blue shirt.
I’m pleasantly surprised how much I like it. I’m planning to give it a test run today when we go out and run errands. If all goes well, I’m pretty sure I’m going to crochet a few more of these in different colors.
