I have a friend who lives in Great Britain who’s a huge fan of the T.V. series “Dr. Who“. We were talking late last year and I said that I was struggling to come up with a Christmas gift for her. Knowing that I am an avid crocheter, she suggested a that I make her a copy of the scarf that the character Tom Baker wore on “Dr. Who”.
I went to Pinterest to look for a crochet pattern. I decided on one by Sandra Petit on Ravelry. From pictures I’d seen online and Sandra’s pattern, I knew that this scarf would be long. She says that hers ended up a little over 12 feet long.
I’m a little over halfway through the pattern, and have been worrying for a while that mine seems to be on the way to much bigger. Even bunched and in a growing pile on the table it looks, well, really big.

So I just laid it out in our hallway to get a good look at it. Yikes. Using a yardstick, I measured my half a scarf–about 10 feet long. Oh no, how did I do THAT?
I’m not stopping now, because I know my friend knows how this thing is supposed to look. I Googled “how long is Tom Baker’s scarf” and found a site that says that it’s just over 7 meters long. When I plugged that into a converter, I saw that makes it just over 22 feet long.
Perfect!
And if it doesn’t suit my friend as an oversized scarf, she can always use it as a runner in her hallway. If her hallway is long enough, that is.

UPDATE: I reconsidered and decided that a ten-and-a-half foot (3.2 meter) scarf is probably long enough. I’m boxing it up and sending it off to my friend in the UK later today–I’ll let you know her reaction when I hear. 😊
