On the 4th of July, I got the crazy idea to crochet a scarf to dress up a really boring T
shirt. Yeah, a scarf. For wearing in July. Because I wanted to wear my blue shirt, but it’s so ho-hum boring I hardly ever wear it. So I made the scarf, wore it on the 4th and actually received a compliment on it (at an ice cream store, a much more appropriate choice for July).
That got me to thinking that I could make more scarves and put them in my Etsy shop, which had been languishing from lack of my attention for over a year.
So I bought a bunch of yarn and started crocheting. I thought I’d make, maybe, 4 to start. I just counted–I’m up to 17. I’ve kept a few, and put a few in my CraftSisters3 shop on Etsy. And sold one, which I consider amazing since this is, after all, the middle of the summer (several of them I made with a lightweight cotton yarn for wearing in warm weather).
I’m using a crochet stitch that’s really versatile. I started using it because I liked how it can create a woven look. Then I started playing around with it, and now figure the sky’s the limit on what my crochet hook and different color yarns can create.
I’ll show you what I mean.
I started with changing colors every row. That gave me that woven fabric look that I like. Below are 3 scarves done in that pattern:

Then I decided to try something different. Every other row, I would do the same color. For example, black-red-black-white-black-blue. Here’s what that looks like:

Cool, huh? I like the striped effect–this is my favorite pattern so far. I kept going though, and decided to try for a bolder pattern. Here are 2 scarves done that way (the top one is cotton yarn, the bottom regular acrylic yarn):

They’re fine, but I don’t like them as much as the other versions. Then I decided to try more creative patterns. Here are the 2 I’ve done so far (the top is Baltimore Orioles colors):

So as I said, the sky is the limit as far as how creative you can get with this particular stitch. I could branch out and try other types of stitches, but right now I want to see how many variations of this one I can come up with.
